voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana, which will mark the beginning of the end of the war on drugs. this may be the most costly, distorting and futile war the united states has ever waged. over the past four decades we have spent $1 trillion to fight this war, without reducing the availability of drugs in cities, while also destroying our penal system. the u.s. has more than three times as many prisoners per capita as we had in 1980 and about ten times as many prisoners per capita as other rich countries, according to data from the oecd. about 1.6 million americans were arrested in 2010 on drug charges, most for using marijuana. this week's votes indicate that americans have begun rethinking these policies, perhaps moving towards ones that would deprive drug cartels of their huge profits and allow our police to focus on serious crime. perhaps the most stunning shift this week came not in the passage of a ballot measure or law but an exit poll finding, one that might move us toward major legislation. when asked what should be done with the almost 12 million illegal immigran

"early start" begins now. the pentagon says the fbi uncovered between 20 and 30,000 pages of potentially between allen and jill kelly. the woman who triggered the petraeus probe after getting threatening e-mails from his mistress, paula broadwell. >> get this. "the wall street journal" reports the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation was removed from the case after it was discovered he sent a shirtless picture of himself to jill kelly. the agent who knew kelly sent the pictures before the investigation began. he was later removed from the investigation because supervisors were concerned the agent may have become obsessed with the case. >> and there's more. a team of fbi agents searching paula broadwell's home yesterday. eight to ten agents brought cardboard boxes and searched both levels of the house. the fbi confirmed agents were there but wouldn't say what they were looking for. >> obviously, a lot going on here. we have two reports. chris lawrence of the pentagon and brianna keeler in our washington bureau.

, released today which indicates the u.s. employers hiring in bigger numbers than expected. let me be clear. this information, this is not coming from that all-important government jobs report. that doesn't come out until tomorrow. so today's numbers come from adp. they process payroll so let's go straight to alison kosik for this. what more do we know about this report? >> okay. what this report does, brooke, surveys how many jobs that private employers have added so it means all those industries that are outside of the government arena and what it said this time around for october is 158,000 jobs were added. and it came in better than expected, seeing good job gains in services and construction and a second report on jobs showing unemployment claims fell by 9,000 last week. decent pieces of news from the labor market but the reality is analysts say it may not have a huge impact on how people vote next week because what matters for voters is what's going on with your own economy an your own life. do you have a job? does your spouse have a job? people are more likely to vote about their own
